Patiala, 4 August – Newsline Express – A research conducted by the Dance Department of Punjabi University, Patiala has found and explored the similarities between the Punjabi folk dance Giddha and the classical dance Kathak. Despite the different styles of both the dances, through this research study, it has been found that these two dances are similar in terms of expressions.
This research work named ‘Folk dance Giddha and classical dance Kathak: A comparative study’ was done by researcher Kiranpreet Kaur under the supervision of Dr. Indira Bali.
Researcher Kiranpreet Kaur said that the conclusions of similarity between folk dance Giddha and the classical dance Kathak have been drawn based on the ancient and authentic Indian text ‘Natya-Shastra’, which is related to the field of arts, which was composed by Bharat Muni. She said that this is the first research work of its kind in the field of folk dances of Punjab where women’s folk dance Giddha has been studied by comparing it with Indian classical dance Kathak with reference to Natya Shastra. She said that the benefit of the results of this research work is to be given to the people related to the fields of both dances.
Dr. Indira Bali told that under this research project, 38 similarities have been brought out by examining the technical aspect of both folk dances Giddha and classical dance Kathak under Nrit, Nritya and Natya. There are 25 hand postures, 1 position management, 1 Bharmiri type and Kasask-Masak in terms of evidence of mutuality and similarity. In terms of dance, out of the eight heroines(Nayikas) recorded in Natya Shastra, 5 heroines and 4 rasas have been seen matching each other in these two dances. In the theatrical aspect, the combination of four elements of acting – Angic, vachik, aharya, Sattvic and facial expression has been carefully compared in both of these arts. She said that this research work will serve as an authentic source for art practitioners, researchers and students to better understand and present both dances.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Arvind, appreciating this research work, congratulated the supervisor and researcher. Talking about this research, he said that through this research, where the purpose of combining language and culture is fulfilled, artists interested in the field of dance, whether they are associated with folk dance or classical dance, Even the artists who want to work in teaching, they will find this research useful.
